The sound of barking instantly puts him on alert, the sound of the watch dogs loud and piercing in his ears. His grip on the stick tightens, but he opens the door anyway.

"Call it off," he says firmly.

[hopepainandshit]

'It' is sitting obediently next to Richter, wiggling intently in place. It's obviously still a puppy, still in the lumpy baby phase, and barely up to Richter's knee. But then, Richter's tall so.

"Ooooh, yeah, she's terrifying," he coos, squatting to give her a treat. "Watch out or your kneecaps are gonna get licked to pieces."

He finally actually looks at Corvo. "What're you doing here, anyway?"

Corvo is still tense to the point where his shoulders ache. But he raises his head, looking down to him as he gives the thing a treat.

"Your Admiral saw fit to make you my keeper this month. I thought I'd stop by."

[hopepainandshit]

Richter blinks in surprise, the cheeky grin dropping away briefly.

"Oh, fuck, was that today?" He pulls his communicator out to double-check it. Just because he knows it's basically a magic billboard doesn't mean he remembers to check it frequently.

He nods, keeping most of his attention on the dog.

As Richter checks, Corvo waits, hand around the staff.

Tiffany just spends her time staring at Richter for more treats.

It's not like the announcement is hard to find, at least. "Well, fuck me I guess. I get to keep an eye on your murderous ass after all." And yet he manages to make it sound like half a compliment. "You're actually my first, believe it or not."

He tips his head in acknowledgement.

"I don't plan on doing anything more or less than what I have been doing. So your job is simple."

[hopepainandshit]

"Well you say that," he says dryly, "but since you went around killing people, there's probably going to be a few people that'll want to kick your arse right back. I know you can defend yourself but that's still something we'll have to look out for."

"If they were going to do it, it would have been when I was injured."

He steps back.

"I have a request."

[hopepainandshit]

"Already?"

But he's hardly offended, just surprised, as he tilts his head slightly. "Alright, sure. Let's hear it. I can't make any promises, but I can at least hear you out."

[ravenswrath]

"Xie Lian wasn't actually assigned to me," he points out. And what's the use of a temporary warden anyway?

"I want the Heart the Outsider gave me," he says without waiting for a response.

[hopepainandshit]

He shrugs at the comment about Xie Lian. It's true, so.

But the Heart gets a frown. Just because he's never heard of it, and the Heart of something certainly didn't sound good.

"And what exactly does this heart..." He leans to give Tiff another treat for being a good girl. "Do?"

[ravenswrath]

"She talks," he explains.

[hopepainandshit]

"A talking heart isn't exactly the compelling argument you think it might be," he points out flatly.

[ravenswrath]

"It's harmless," he deadpans. "It isn't a weapon, which I'm sure I could get easier."

Hence the walking stick.

"Sure, but you haven't explained what it is yet. Who's the Outsider?"

[ravenswrath]

"A god."

He takes a step back, away from the dog.

Richter just frowns. Tiffany just tilts her head when the man moves away from her.

"You want the heart of a god that talks to you," he echoes. He looks incredibly skeptical. "And... what sort of things does she say, exactly?"

[ravenswrath]

"What does it matter?" he wonders. "What worry do you have?"

"Well seeing as I'm trying to kill someone calling herself a god back home, I think I've got a right to know what yours is telling you in case it's kill everyone on the ship again!"

He realizes his mistake and sighs. "No. He doesn't speak to me through it. It's not his voice and not his spirit."

[hopepainandshit]

Alright, so the Outsider's a he and the heart's a she?

"Why do you want it?" he asks instead, more evenly. "What does it even say?"

"It was originally given to me to find runes. To hear secrets."

He leans against the wall.

Alright, they're getting somewhere.

"What do you expect to find here, exactly?"

[ravenswrath]

"Nothing. It's nostalgic, not useful," he explains, looking past him.
