"A talking heart isn't exactly the compelling argument you think it might be," he points out flatly.

"It's harmless," he deadpans. "It isn't a weapon, which I'm sure I could get easier."

Hence the walking stick.

"Sure, but you haven't explained what it is yet. Who's the Outsider?"

[ravenswrath]

"A god."

He takes a step back, away from the dog.

Richter just frowns. Tiffany just tilts her head when the man moves away from her.

"You want the heart of a god that talks to you," he echoes. He looks incredibly skeptical. "And... what sort of things does she say, exactly?"

"What does it matter?" he wonders. "What worry do you have?"

"Well seeing as I'm trying to kill someone calling herself a god back home, I think I've got a right to know what yours is telling you in case it's kill everyone on the ship again!"

He realizes his mistake and sighs. "No. He doesn't speak to me through it. It's not his voice and not his spirit."

Alright, so the Outsider's a he and the heart's a she?

"Why do you want it?" he asks instead, more evenly. "What does it even say?"

"It was originally given to me to find runes. To hear secrets."

He leans against the wall.

Alright, they're getting somewhere.

"What do you expect to find here, exactly?"

[ravenswrath]

"Nothing. It's nostalgic, not useful," he explains, looking past him.

There's a thoughtful hum from Richter.

Then: "Wait, how do you carry it around?" The obvious tone of teenage nosiness, rather than formal inquiry. "D'you just have a human heart hanging around your neck singing about treasure all the time?"

He waves a hand. "It disappears," he mutters with a roll of his eyes.

He can't bog himself down with the details of why; it isn't smart to start unraveling that.

"That's incredibly reassuring," he points out dryly.

Then he just shrugs. "Right, well. I'll ask the Admiral about it, see what he can do. I doubt it's the weirdest request he's ever gotten."

He gives him a mock bow.

"That's all I ask. What do you want in return?"

Two can play that game.

He bends down and picks up Tiff, cradling her like a baby to his chest, which makes her tail wiggle gleefully. "Pat my dog."

He shakes his head. "And have her bite my hand off? No thank you."

He turns to walk away.

And Richter follows, holding his puppy out at arm's length.

"Awww, come on! This is as little as she's ever gonna be! She can't even break the skin yet."

Corvo makes it to the stairs, glances up, and Blinks to the top of the landing and then again to the next floor.

"Not a chance, warden," he calls down.

"You're gonna give in one day!" he calls back, and fully doesn't expect a response. He just gives Tiff's nose a little kiss as he brings her back inside.
